 Windows 10 :

With the launch of Windows 10 due to be released July 2015 ,You will be able to upgrade FOR FREE using a one-step process for customers using the current version of Windows 7 SP1 or Windows 8.1  for up to a year.

If you`re using an older version (Windows 7 or Windows 8)  you`ll have to upgrade to the current version first, those upgrades are free too, making it a two step process for users on older versions.

Microsoft`s goal is to get all Windows customers to take advantage of the upgrade , providing better feature Apps and security.

 HISTORY OF WINDOWS

Windows 2.11                stable

Windows 3.x                  better integrated

Windows 95                  stable, not much features

Windows 98/98se           Upgraded features

Windows NT 4.0             limited compatibility

Windows 2000               stable but slow

Windows XP                  performance upgrade

Windows XP SP1            security upgrade

Windows XP SP2            firewall upgrade

Windows Vista               solid but sluggish

Windows Vista SP1         security upgrade

Windows Vista SP2         firewall upgrade

Windows Vista               solid but slow

Windows Vista SP1         much better

Windows 7                   rock solid , easy lay out

Windows 7 SP1             New features ,New anti-virus

Windows 8                   more secure

Windows 8.1                easier to configure

Windows 10                 Faster and more compact

For many Microsoft users Windows 7 was a favourite system with an easy start up menu , plus easy layout .

b2ap3_thumbnail_windows-10-screen-2.jpg The Windows 10 provides nearly identical Window 7 user experience, except it`s faster and  more automated with updates, best of all it gives us back the Window 7 style Menu but with Modern  Apps for music, photos, movies AND the New Project Spartan Browser enabling users to interact web  pages like never before.

Microsoft`s challenge now is to introduce users to New Apps in Windows 10, something they failed  to do in Windows 8, with so many of us using Social Media these days it seems like a perfect solution,  these Apps can be displayed on your start up screen as shown here.

 Cortana :     What is Cortana?

 Check out this video:

Cortana is a feature of the operating system "Project Spartan Browser" of Windows 10, JUST LIKE a personal assistant she can search the Web or Your PC for a required page or document. The App will keep track of your Calender (remind you of up coming events)or even tell you jokes, all you have to do is speak naturally to Cortana (mic and speakers needed)The more you use this Cortana App, the better the performance, as it enables the App to build up a history of your searches, for example: if you regularly check the news & weather OR if you like a certain type of music or food OR if you follow a sports team, Cortana will remind you AND automatically update the information. You can even gets tasks done with the help of Cortana eg :check traffic, flight information or send emails from your contact lists .

A brilliant App I think.....

As I promised last month, here is the latest update from Microsoft regarding their shiny new replacement for the much maligned windows 8 family.

So finally they have took the wraps off the next release of Windows. If like me, you want to understand how this will all hang together (and lets face it, any decent techs person will be itching to try it out) You can install a free, unfinished “beta version” version this week, which will give you plenty of time to figure out whether to move to the new version sometime next year, which oddly enough is going to be called Windows 10!!
Ok, so why is it called Windows 10? What happened to 9? Trying to make sense of the way Microsoft name their release is like trying to work out the UK vehicle registration number puzzle, it almost requires Mensa type approach to work out the pattern.
Up to press, the pattern is as follows: Windows 1, 2, 3, 95, 98, 2000, ME, XP, Vista, 7, 8, all in all 24 different versions since 1985

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Microsoft_Windows_versions

b2ap3_thumbnail_desktop_20141006-132133_1.png

Unless you have been living on the moon for last year or so, you will be aware that Windows 8, was a poor mashup of two operating systems. There was the touchscreen version of the Modern or Metro tiled interface, but Microsoft have now dropped those names and called it,,,, well, nothing!!!
And hiding underneath, existed the regular desktop:

And here was the confusion, as both the Modern(Metro) and the underlying Desktop were in fact 2 separate environments, with each having its own web browser, control panel, email application and so on.
But even worse, each also had its own programs, as the Metro programs were different to the same program on the desktop version, which unlike the Ipad or Android devices, share the same apps.

This was because Microsoft believed that the whole world would be using touch screens within a year, but they were very wrong.

Windows 8 bombed out in the sales spectacularly, with 51% of all pc’s still running Windows 7, and only 13% have upgraded to 8.1.

So what the rhetoric coming from Microsoft with the preview of Windows 10?

The OS Group VP Joe Belfore said in his demo of 10 “ In windows 8, when users launched a Modern (Metro) app, it sort of had a different environment, we don’t want that duality."
So how’s that for a statement then from the top honcho??
We all knew the obvious thing to do was to split the versions out, use the desktop for the pc’s, and the tiled version for the touch screen tablets, but they didn’t listen.
Well guess, they now listened at last!
So if you Windows 10 with a regular mouse and keyboard, you get the proper start menu, not just a hidden secret key+X, but the real deal, no more big tiles taking up your whole desktop.

windows 10 new desktop view

The tiles are still there though, but they very strangely pop out of the regular start menu this time, which to me is a bit weird still, as I hoped they drop them completely, or at least give the option to revert to a Windows 7 type menu view.

And seeing as the Modern (Metro) has gone, so have all those secondary apps, so the apps now open as they did in Windows 7, with a regular look and control bars.

For those without a mouse and keyboard, you can still get the tiled version as the pc will drop into tablet mode, attach keyboard, and you drop into the desktop version.
So what else is new?

b2ap3_thumbnail_New-Features.jpg

Just like in the Mac OS X and Ubuntu, your search results now include internet results as well as local results.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Task-View.jpg

The new “Task view” shows all open windows in miniature just like the Macs “Mission Control”
Once we get our beta version running, we will be able to give you more info on the new features, but let’s be honest, anything has to be better that Windows 8 and 8.1, hasn’t it?

Here at the P.C Shop La Herrada, Los Montesinos, Costa Blanca Spain, we have had a fairly busy summer considering most of our clients return to the U.k during the hot months of July and August.

Our 3 internet terminals have being busy, printing out boarding passes nonstop for returning holiday makers, the majority of the boarding passes being that of Ryanair.

Having to replace our ink cartridges at least once a week, it got me thinking of bygone days, where you checked in at the airport and were handed your boarding passes by a pleasant person behind the check-in desk, who would always accommodate parties sitting together .

So on my research into this subject, l found the following:

b2ap3_thumbnail_Ryanair-plane-photo.jpg

Print-at-home boarding passes were first introduced by Alaska Airlines in 1999,and have been used by most American Airlines since 2003.

A similar scheme was introduced in Europe in May of 2006, one of the first Airlines to use the new scheme was the "no frills Airline" Ryanair.

Ryanair stated by introducing the scheme they would be able to save millions on ink and paper as well as time and manpower of their Check-in staff and that these savings would be transferred onto their passengers.

Over the years hundreds of disgruntled passengers have taken to social media to complain about this charge.

One of the most famous being Lilly Allen who took to twitter in 2011 to express her disappointment in budget Airline Ryanair.

The British singer who was flying from London to Belfast along with her sister to launch their new clothing line at the Brown Thomas store in Belfast........Lilly tweeted "Ryanair have just charged me 40 quid to print out my boarding pass and now they have taken it off me. 40 quid for a piece of paper that was mine for about 7 minutes, wow ".b2ap3_thumbnail_lilly-allen-pic.jpg

I know first hand how she felt having fallen a victim to the same charges for 2 boarding passes on a flight from Alicante to Dublin in 2010.In January 2011 more controversy surrounding this subject, Judge Barbara Cordoba from Barcelona stated " that under international airtravel conventions, Ryanair can neither demand passengers turn up at the Airport with their boarding passes nor charge them €40 if they do not." The normal practice is that the Airline are obligated to print out boarding passes as part of their service and that the responsibility would therefore lie with them."

Ryanair appealed the ruling stating that it does not violate any European laws, and that its passengers are aware of this charge and must agree to the terms ie: they will print out their boarding passes when they are booking their tickets or pay the penalty. The ruling was over turned and the rest is history.

New recent changes means that you can no longer print out your return boarding pass until one week before your scheduled flights, where before passengers could print off outbound and return boarding passes in the comfort of their own home, today passengers are having to locate businesses like ourselves whilst on holiday, often in a fluster and confused with the Spanish keyboard where the @ symbol is located slightly different from what they are use to.

Here at The PC Shop, La Herrada, Los Montesinos we are always here to assist in a warm and friendly atmosphere where our customers can avail of our services with professional help and assistance.

In October 2008 a pilot scheme was introduced at Hopkins International Airport in America, where passengers could use their smart phones to download their boarding passes using an app, the electronic pass includes a bar code with encrypted flight information that could be used instead of the printed version. It was successful and is currently used throughout the world.

Ryanair launched their new mobile app as recently as July of this year (2014) the scheme has had a good success so far. Ryanair passengers can download the app onto their iPhones, iPads, Samsung Galaxy or indeed most android phones will be able to use this app, an encrypted code similar to this picture is sent to your smart phone when your flight details have being confirmed.

b2ap3_thumbnail_boarding-pass-pic.jpgb2ap3_thumbnail_Ryanair-new-phone-app.jpgIt can be used instead of a printed boarding pass as shown here on the left,

The New App on the right shows what the screen will look like, using just a quick swipe over the scanner can reveal all the information necessary for boarding e.g Name, Passport details,  destination etc.

Here is a video from Ryanair`s own website on how to use the new App. Whats your view on this?

Have you updated your Windows 8.1?

windows-8-update-2.jpg

If you upgraded to the latest version of Windows 8.1 as a part of Microsoft’s Patch Tuesday release last week, then Microsoft urgethose users to uninstall the update.

They have received a large number of complaints that the update created a crash bug “0×50 Stop error message” and some weird font rendering display problems.

Microsoft have removed the buggy update from its site, but urge everyone to check and uninstall it if they are experiencing anyproblems, while they look for a fix to the reported bugs.

How to remove it

b2ap3_thumbnail_sad-face1.jpg

Microsoft said it was investigating reports that users are experiencing a crash alongside “0×50 Stop error message” after upgrading to the update released last week, alongside a pair of bugs that affect font rendering and font selection.
Users who have already installed the update can uninstall it by following the steps laid out in this bulletin - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791.

If you are not experiencing any problems you don’t have to uninstall the updates, and if you are only experiencing problems with displaying certain fonts, you can uninstall the updates through Control Panel

Now this is where it could get difficult

For those of you that are having problems with their system crashing you need to get jiggy with the windows registry to make changes and the delete the computer’s font cache. If that applies to you, you will have follow the instructions in the link to the letter or risk further issues;  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2982791

These bugs show a poor development for Microsoft, when you think that this is the first month that the company has used Patch Tuesday to roll out software updates for Windows 8.1 in addition to the usual list of security patches.

If you are unsure of how to perform the uninstall, or of any of the above steps, then please contact us, and we will happy to advise on this.

Many of us now have iPads and iPhones and may well be using iMessage.

b2ap3_thumbnail_silver-apple.pngThe iMessage system is a great way to send texts from phone-to-phone without the paying fees to your mobile carrier.

However over the past year it has been hit by spammers. Most of the time, the spammer will need a phone number to deliver the iMessage spam, but if you’ve added your email address to iMessage, the spammers can get you using that address too.

Now you would think this would be a high priority for Apple to stop this spam, well you would be wrong, it still looks like they have not been able to stop the spammers.

Are you ready for a new version of Windows?

Microsoft is to release a Windows 9 "technology preview" sometime at the back end of September or early October.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Windows-9.jpgIt seems that this move to Windows 9 is a direct result of the weird and often annoying traits that Windows 8 and 8.1 forced upon us, and so Microsoft hope to win some custom back with the release of 9.

We will be taking part in the windows 9 review, and posting updates on how we think it will change the perception that so many users have built towards Microsoft since the excellent XP was ditched, and Windows 7 was superseded by 8.

Its unclear at the moment how Windows 9 (codename Threshold) will differ from 8, but its expected to have a proper start menu, and put more emphasis on the more traditional input methods like the mouse and keyboard, and less on the touch screen input method.

Its also rumoured to be dropping the chimes that appear whenever you move your mouse to the side of the screen.

Lets hope Microsoft listen to its customers this time, as prior to the release of Windows 8, they went through a long user feedback period, and then largely ignored the whole thing and did what they thought we wanted, which of course the majority pushed back against and was shown in the drop of sales, and the increased interest in Linux.

We have a blog posting on the benefits of using Linux, you can read it here

Keep a watch out on this space, as we will be posting updates on Windows 9 as we come across them.

Regards

Phil

So do you still have an old Windows XP laptop or desktop?

I did until a few months ago, when after being Microsoft engineer for 20 years i decided to embrace what may well become the most popular operating system family in the next 5 years, i decided to do something with my old Windows XP machine, and install....

LINUX!!!

Whats Linux i hear ask, well most of you though may not realise, is that those of us that use the internet have already been using Linux for years, as just about every web site we access runs on a Linux server, including this one.

Back in April this year, Ubuntu released its long awaited latest desktop version Codenamed Trusty Tahr (who creates these names?) which may just help you out, save you money, and make you sleep sound at night.

b2ap3_thumbnail_Ubuntu.jpgWhy?, well version 14.4 is the best way to reuse any old XP based machine you have hiding under the bed away from the hackers and viruses that Microsoft no longer protect you from.

It will be fully supported for a full five years, so you dont have to worry about updates, and, you also dont have to worry about antivus software to the extent you did with XP, as Ubuntu is very very secure and unlikely to be hit by any virus or malware.

But of course, there are antvirus engines available for Ubuntu if you so wish.

The timing of this release is good, seeing as its coming just as Microsoft has abandoned Windows XP and stopped supplying any more essential security patches and updates. So for many users – home and professional alike – this capable Linux OS could prove the much-needed replacement and money saver.

Ubuntu under the bonnet

if you have ever used an Apple Mac before, then you will recognise the desktop layout, which is clean and uncluttered. It has all the usual things though that you expect from a PC, they just look a little different thats all.

Watch the click below and see it in action.

So whats missing?

Well nothing really, but I guess what you will you really asking yourself is, is it user friendly, and can i do what i did on XP?

Well the answer is yes, and yes.

Instead of Internet explorer, it uses the old favourite Firefox, which in itself is was much faster that IE ever was, plus it also supports Google Chrome.

The Microsoft Office suite is replaced with the free Libre Office suite, or we can install the just as good Open Office suite, both do everything that the home user will require, but if you have a paid version of Office, then that too will run on Ubuntu.

If you wish to reuse your old XP machine, and have a solid fast machine, then we can set you up with Ubuntu, and make sure all your existing pictures and documents are also copied over, so you wont lose a thing, except the worry about online security.

Whats next for Ubuntu?

Well they they are planning to make the move to the mobile platform, so it wont be too long until we start to see it on smart phones and tablets, and seeing as Linux has been around for much longer than Google, the wait may not be too long.

If you are thinking of recycling your old hardware, drop us a line on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or call in and see us.

Regards

b2ap3_thumbnail_laptop-repair.jpgComputers like cars need regular maintenance in order to keep them running at their best.

If your computer seems sluggish and over worked, we can help! We perform an advanced annual PC Health check and service, at a fixed rate (no nasty surprises) Our Health check is designed to maximize your pc or laptop's performance by removing un-necessary files and registry settings as well removal of spyware software.

We recommend a maintenance service and health check at least once every 12 months to keep things running smoothly. What's more this service will help prevent premature breakdowns, remember that another name for computers is "Vacuum Cleaner" all those fans not only cool the computer but also like cars need regular maintenance in order to keep them running at their best.

It doesn't take long in the hot dusty climate of Spain for your pc to start gathering dust, but the effect of it can be very destructive.

Laptops are especially prone to dust and fluff problems, which is because they have a much smaller fan, and very little space inside to allow the air to flow freely around the internal components.

These internal components can be very expensive to replace, as they sometime require the installation of the whole of the main circuit board, which can in some cases cost more than a new laptop, so its important to keep your machine clean and healthy to avoid such issues.

Preventative maintenance

b2ap3_thumbnail_pc-repair-guy.pngTo make sure your expensive laptop or desktop stays in peak condition, we recommend a 12 monthly health check, it wont take too long to do, and in the long run will save you loads.
